Talks on Teacher Evaluations Disintegrate as Deadline Looms

New York City and its teachers union are stuck in their negotiations over a new teacher evaluation system, jeopardizing $450 million in state aid if they have not reached a deal in less than two weeks.

NYC and local union still negotiating new contract. Sticking point is teacher evals, which, by state law, must be based on performance. Union runs ads saying mayor “going after teachers again.” NYC commissioner says one goal of new evals is to improve student achievement.
