Death sentence pronounced on PS 14 in Stapleton; desperate rally today

The Stapleton school will die a slow death between now and then, and a new elementary school will open in the building that September, if the Panel for Educational Policy approves a Department of Education proposal. The panel, dominated by appointees of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, has rarely bucked the recommendations of the department, headed by his appointee, Chancellor Dennis Walcott. “These are never easy decisions, but when a school has failed to serve its students well year after year — even after receiving additional supports — we have a responsibility to provide students with better options,” Walcott said in a statement. “We are already hard at work creating the great new schools that these communities deserve.”
