Parent Trigger Power Trip

The Parent Empowerment Act, enacted in January 2010, was an attempt to do just what its title suggests – give parents more options for real action when their kids' schools just aren't working. To understand why it is so important, look no further than the first petition for change at an elementary school where only 24 percent of fifth-graders are proficient in reading and math, according to 2010 California Standards tests. The school district has done everything possible to put up roadblocks when parents requested major restructuring as the new law allows. So, it is heartening to see that Gov. Jerry Brown's new State Board of Education finally has caught on and sided with those who want to make the new law work – not with those who would like to kill it.
