R.I. bill would merge boards governing K-12 and higher education

The new chairman of the powerful House Finance Committee is proposing to merge the state’s two public education boards –– the Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education and the Board of Governors for Higher Education –– into a single 15-member Board of Regents. The 57-page proposal would also eliminate one of the two commissioner positions.
