SC teachers could help create new pay system
Teachers would help create the pay-for-performance system that would determine their salaries under a change approved Thursday by the House budget-writing committee but opposed by South Carolina's superintendent. South Carolina schools chief Mick Zais says teachers' salaries should be based on their effectiveness in the classroom, not their seniority or post-graduate credentials. The provision would direct the state Education Department to form a committee of teachers to come up with a compensation plan by Dec. 1, as a recommendation to legislators. Teacher training and evaluations, improvement on SAT scores and school building maintenance are among items that South Carolina schools chief Mick Zais recommends trimming in an effort to fend off cuts to classroom learning.
