How a Supreme Court Ruling on a Missouri Playground’s Funding Could Alter California’s School Voucher Ban

Since California’s constitution was passed in 1879, a strict separation between church and state has been enshrined in state law. That includes a clear ban on spending public money “for support of any sectarian or denominational school,” or on “any school not under the exclusive control of the officers of the public schools.” That could come under fire this week, when the U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments Wednesday in a case that challenges a state’s ban on funding a religious school.
