Last month, I traveled to Pierre for a civics education summit sponsored by new South Dakota Secretary of Education Ben Jones. This turned out to be one of the most useful and encouraging workshops I’ve attended in my more than 40 years of teaching. It was encouraging partly because so much of the conference was teacher-centered: a genuine attempt to find out what our state’s history and social studies teachers thought about how best to improve civics education.
