Harlem charter school teachers unionize

Teachers at a bilingual elementary school in West Harlem are relieved to have won a fight with the school board to unionize—a rare move for a charter school. Faculty and staff at the New York French-American Charter School, on 120th Street between Manhattan Avenue and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, signed union cards and wrote a letter to the school’s board asking for union representation, but the board refused to recognize them. They approached the city’s Public Employment Relations Board, who ruled in favor of their right to join the United Federation of Teachers on March 14.
