Charter school may worsen SD 227s finances

Rich Township High School District 227 may have survived the states budget crisis so far, but officials fear a new charter school within the district will cause deep financial woes in the coming years. The district is on pace to spend by 2015 the nearly $40 million it keeps in a three-month reserve fund, if nothing changes, Bloom Township School Treasurer Rob Grossi told district officials recently. At that point, District 227s yearly deficit would stand at more than $10 million, Grossi said. The charter school is one of the main reasons for District 227s projected deficit, Grossi said, though officials of Southland Prep say the blame is misplaced.
