Horn Lake students discover bridge, may see improvement in math skills

Horn Lake Intermediate School fifth-grade teacher Joye Cullen took an email she received from the American Contract Bridge League and ran with it. "I went to a workshop at the beginning of the school year," she said. "They gave us a one-day lesson for playing bridge." From there, Cullen consulted with her colleagues, got guidance counselor Susan Goodman to jump onboard and formed the HLIS Bridge Club. "That's what I think is so unique about it," Horn Lake principal Vickie Bullock said. "Years ago in the South, everybody played bridge. I would have thought it was a dying art." Every Wednesday after school, more than 30 students come together for the trick-taking game played in groups of four.
