Sneak peek gives freshmen crash course in high school

Travis Bainter has already learned some important lessons about high school. The questions asked by teachers are more complex, and so are the study topics, the 14-year-old explained. But instead of grumbling, the soon-to-be Lincoln High School freshman said Wednesday he’s thankful to get a sneak peek at what will be expected when classes resume Aug. 22. Bainter is one of roughly 250 incoming ninth-graders in the Des Moines school district participating in a two-week high school preparation program dubbed “8.5.” Teens spend part of their time learning about study skills and time management tactics. They also complete English and mathematics computer-based courses with help from district teachers.
