Approaching High School

Travis Bainter has already learned some important lessons about high school. The questions asked by teachers are more complex, and so are the study topics, the 14-year-old explained. But instead of grumbling, the soon-to-be Lincoln High School freshman said Wednesday hes thankful to get a sneak peek at what will be expected when classes resume Aug. 22. Bainter is one of roughly 250 incoming ninth-graders in the Des Moines school district participating in a two-week high school preparation program dubbed 8.5. Teens spend part of their time learning about study skills and time management tactics. They also complete English and mathematics computer-based courses with help from district teachers.
